Jane Howard, a reporter for Life magazine, wrote some of the earliest stories about Esalen. As she explains in a book about her experience, "I had never heard of any of this until a little before January 27, 1968 when Life magazine sent me to Big Sur,California." Her job was to report on a five-day Advanced Encounter Workshop. "I had never heard of an 'Advanced Encounter Workshop' much less been to an elementary one, nor had I even much idea of what one was. But I had done risky things before - Had I not skipped fifth grade....Had I not on one foolhardy occasion leaped from a plane with a parachute? Perhaps now, with a smilar combination of luck and chutzpah, I could fake it and 'encounter' - whatever encountering was - in a passably advanced manner."
