I have aggregated the history of location scouting in southern california via manilla folders used for presentation of location scouting photography from the early '80s to the early 2000s.
Sources include individual location scouts' collections, the california film commission library (retired in 2015) and my personal collection.
The amount is over 400 linear feet and is organized via the California Film Commission system.
The Getty Research Institute acquired 10 linear feet of folders :
and the index of their acquisition is pictured below.
Description of their acquisition:
"Comprising 382 files documenting residential and commercial sites mainly in Los Angeles and its environs, this selection of location shots chronicles how locations for movies and television were determined in film production.
The collection includes residential and home neighborhoods, such as Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Malibu, Palm Springs, and Pasadena (99 sites); residential apartment locations, such as Downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Venice (55 sites);
and numerous commercial sites, including bars, hotels, museums, office buildings, prisons, restaurants, and theaters (228 sites).
The location files presented here, salvaged from location scouts and studios by Robert Mendel and Michael Burmeister, reveal a cross-section of venues deemed desirable for film production during the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
